Unknown risk: assessing refugee camp flood risk in Ethiopia

چکیده
Abstract The number of global refugees has been rising annually for the last decade. Many these are housed within camps, in temporary structures, vulnerable to impacts flooding. flood risk is not well understood. Flood guidance available camp planners and managers vague, existing data often lacking remote areas where camps typically located. We show how should, should not, be used assess refugee Ethiopia; a country hosting 725,000 refugees, primarily from 4 neighbouring countries, 24 camps. find that population datasets, national assessments, do accurately capture populations. Even most accurate datasets missing three fifths exposure. propose, test, alternative approaches representing exposure combine reported estimates with on area, building footprints, density. Applying our assessment, we 95.8% Ethiopia exposed flooding some degree between 143,208 (19.8%) 182,125 (25.2%) 1% Annual Exceedance Probability (100-year return period). South Sudanese nationality flooding, but Eritrean high life. Promisingly, many may set up such way reduces Our study demonstrates data, augmented local can useful understanding consistent scalable approach as first-order analysis risk, identifying hotspots, helping prioritize further detailed analyses inform within-camp adaptation.

Assessing flood risk for a rural detention area
Flood detention areas serve the primary purpose of controlled water storage during large flood events in order to decrease the flood risk downstream along the river. These areas are often used for agricultural production. While various damage estimation methods exist for urban areas, there are only a few, most often simpler approaches for loss estimation in rural areas. The loss assessment can ...
متن کاملAssessing and Affording the Control of Flood Risk
Flood is a most serious hazard to life and property. Dams, dikes and levees are often designed to a fuzzy quantity (PMF). Probabilistic design is preferable but requires that hydrological data be translated into a local monoscopic flood probability distribution. This process introduces information that goes beyond the facts. The method of relative entropy with quantile constraints minimizes thi...

Today, due to climate change, natural hazards and how to deal with them are among the most important concerns of researchers in environmental planning and crisis management. The purpose of this study is the assessment of the potential flood risk in Sarbaz drainage basin. For this purpose, the databases including elevation, slope, geological characteristics, soil characteristics, precipitation, ...

An outbreak of watery diarrhea struck within the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya in April 2005; 418 people were treated, and 4 persons died. Vibrio cholerae O1 was isolated from 33 patients. In June 2005, we conducted a retrospective matched case-control study to define risk factors associated with cholera among camp residents and identify interventions that could prevent further cases and future ...
